Facebook – 10 Years Old Already

On February 4, 2014, Facebook celebrated its 10th anniversary without undue fanfare (so to speak). Time certainly seems to fly right on by, although that may be due to the fact that most of us Facebook users (1 billion strong and still growing) have only had great familiarity with the social networking giant for no more than half of that time (and for many, even less).

Initially known as The Facebook, this then social media bit player was just a way for students at elite colleges to stay connected on-line and away from the overcrowded MySpace. At the time Facebook did have friends, but no facebook fans or all of the other metrics that one is so familiar with today. Yet, despite its modest beginings (if you want to call being hatched at Harvard “modest”), Facebook has somehow escaped the tag of being just “cool” to evolving into being essential. As discussed on our earlier post most importantly Facebook has avoided the ups and downs (literally) of MySpace (despite some virus researchers declaration to the opposite). That Facebook is essential today is obvious as its users exceed 1 billion and daily individual users who log in tally almost 75% of the total number of users. And, as Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg points out:

“I’m even more excited about the next ten years than the last,” Zuckerberg writes. “The first ten years were about bootstrapping this network. Now we have the resources to help people across the world solve even bigger and more important problems.

“Today, only one-third of the world’s population has access to the internet. In the next decade, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to connect the other two-thirds.

“Today, social networks are mostly about sharing moments. In the next decade, they’ll also help you answer questions and solve complex problems.”

So this is not even a half-way point for Facebook according to its leader. And he is probably right as the growth of the internet continues to amaze. Soon we may be hearing the solicitations of Cameroon’s best selling carbonated beverage pleading with us to help them get more Facebook likes just as Coke and Pepsi do now.

Well, won’t that be a fun future. Happy Birthday Facebook – we’re all Fans!
